About this deal

Terry Pratchett is more than a magician. He is the kindest, most fascinating teacher you ever had. He tells a story of the nomes, the 'little people' who have always lived in the baseboards of a large department store, and in this story we see ourselves: how high is up, where does the horizon lie, how do we know everything we've always believed to be true? A delicious, rewarding, wry and antic fable with a river of important philosophy surging beneath its surface. Buy this book for a smart kid, and open the sky as wide as the heavens." Gurder presides over the Abbott's funeral, and it is revealed that he was chosen by the old Abbott to replace him. Gurder, however, does not want the job. Masklin comes up with a plan to save the nomes; they will leave the way they arrived, by stealing a lorry. This book is the first in a series of three books and was recommended to me by her and she said, "You are going to love these." She was absolutely right. While reading the whole time I kept thinking I want to write books like these. Forget the huge daunting novel. How about a short, quirky, hilarious, and fun short series for older kids? I think I can do that. The main theme in the trilogy is the struggle of challenging society's accepted beliefs in the face of new information. This theme recurs through the books and includes changes in the scientific establishment, political establishment, religious beliefs, accepted history and family values of the nomes.

Some of the surviving puppets are on public display at the Cosgrove Hall Exhibition in Manchester. [5] Episodes [ edit ] No. Predominantly written as a children's book in the late eighties, this fun adventure can be enjoyed by all ages. The (g)nomes have to leave their home, all ten of them, as the ressources decline and they can't find enough food for everybody. They climb onto a lorry and hope that it will bring them to a place where they can live. DreamWorks Acquires Film Rights to Terry Pratchett's Bromeliad Trilogy". WriteNews.com. 2 May 2001 . Retrieved 23 July 2011. Arriving in Florida, the Nomes help themselves to hotel food while Arnold is in the shower. Coming out unexpectedly, he sees Masklin, but they escape into the surrounding Everglades where they discover another group of Nomes led by Shrub (that is her name) and her son Pion. Initially they do not understand each other, but The Thing is able to translate; the new group of Nomes speak authentic Nomish, the original language of the Nomes. A bromeliad is a flower that grows on the tops of trees in the South American rain forest. Water accumulates in the flowers and tiny frogs live there. The swim around, mate with other frogs, lay eggs, do what frogs do, and die and the life cycle renews itself with the next batch of tadpoles. We’d call it a microcosm. That old softie, how absolutely right he is. I must have been eleven when I read this and I remember it being a little challenging but vivid and eye-opening. Whole sections felt wonderfully familiar and the entire climax I recalled as if I read it just a couple years ago. It's a book that inspires a fascination with language and the willingness to challenge dubious information. It's funny that Harlan Ellison, a name I of course didn't recognize, would have this quote on here. I actually gasped when I turned the book around and saw his name, someone who, in my 20s, was another obsession. I loved this book is what I'm saying. It hides some really great messages in a hilarious fable, what else can you ask for?

When the Abbott is alone with Masklin, he says that he has a number of concerns about the future of the Store. The Abbott reveals that, many years ago, the different departments fought each other for control of the Store. It was only when the Sationeri asserted that Arnold Bros. (est 1905) wanted the departments to live in peace that the wars ended. If the Stationeri is proved wrong about the existence of Outside, the other departments may decide they were wrong about Arnold Bros. too, and start fighting again. Therefore the Abbott must pretend that everything is normal to keep the peace. The Thing then tells the Abbott the true history of the Nomes, starting with their spaceship crash-landing on earth 15,000 years ago.

Arnold, William (20 November 2008). "Q & A: Director Danny Boyle says he's happy in the 'Slum' ". Seattle Post-Intelligencer . Retrieved 23 July 2011. This book is technically written for children, but honestly, I have trouble believing that a lot of 5th-8th graders will get the satire in here. I would say that this is *appropriate* for children, but that it is a great book for readers of all ages. If you're looking for a laugh and enjoy British humor, then this is laugh-out-loud funny and I highly recommend it. In the same vein, I can recommend his other book on little people: The Carpet People, as you can read here.
