About this deal

I was at my last school for 4 years and we had ********* book fairs every term – and every term, I was disappointed by the narrow range of books. Seeing as this is a picture book though, I decided to listen to the audiobook while reading along (which I highly recommend doing)!

Yourself and Bob are much cherished in our booky world and I personally really appreciate everything that you do. Publication dates are subject to change (although this is an extremely uncommon occurrence overall).

In publishing Change Sings we celebrate the power of words to change the world, inspiring the next generation of readers with hope for a better future. This was a fairly short picture book and audiobook (only 4 minutes long) but it was still packed with lyrical verses and gorgeous illustrations.

We might find that playing together means we can make music together, we can live in harmony, we can enjoy each other’s music and company. The first time I heard about Amanda Gorman, and indeed this is when she rose to fame, was when she recited her poem The Hill We Climb at the Inauguration ceremony for US President Joe Biden in 2021. Honestly, I've become an even bigger fan of Gorman's work over the past few months and SEPTEMBER CAN'T COME SOON ENOUGH! Walt Whitman’s WHEN I HEARD THE LEARN'D ASTRONOMER was a Golden Kite Honor Book and also won the 2004 Parents’ Choice Gold Award.

The closing double-page spread shows the young narrator holding out a guitar so that whoever is listening can pluck a note and join in. It might take ‘some courage’ to show tolerance, but then again, we need to ‘fight’ to build a ‘bigger bridge’ rather than a ‘taller fence’. She talks about not just talking about where people come from, or how they arrived in the community, but also walking people’s differences to show that they have similarities too. Are there ideas, people, or things you think are missing that should be in a children’s anthem for change?

The sequence of learning begins with children discovering a guitar in their classroom with a motivational letter from the author. In this stirring, much-anticipated picture book by presidential inaugural poet and activist Amanda Gorman, anything is possible when our voices join together. Loren Long's illustrations are done by hand (also unusual as more and more picture book art is done digitally) using acrylics and colored pencil on illustration board. The lyrics for the United States national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner," come from the "Defence of Fort M'Henry," a poem written by lawyer and amateur poet Francis Scott Key. We end as we began with our narrator on a white page, this time looking directly at us with an invitation to carry the song onwards and leaving the reader with a belief in collective action for positive change. Loren Long is the author and illustrator of the New York Times bestselling Otis series which is in development as an animated television series. While not overt, there are very clear references that adult readers will recognise to the political situation in Gorman’s home country, the USA. The girl decides to go on a journey, taking her guitar with her along the way, and as she goes on her travels she meets other children.
