By the end of the book, I totally and utterly besotted with Dain and felt for him even though some of his thoughts were truly horridly misogynistic. No respectable woman would have anything to do with the “Bane and Blight of the Ballisters”—and he wants nothing to do with respectable women. I'll definitely be reading this one again on my Kindle because while I enjoyed listening to it, I would much prefer imagining Jessica and Dain's voice on my own in my head.

From the beginning I could see them both clearly in my minds eye and felt, through clever writing by the author, their attraction to each other (even if neither of them actually wanted to feel anything) and a good picture of the people they were mixing with and the places they were situated in.These two are one of my favorite couples and I look forward to re-reading this book in the near future! She doesn’t back down from him when he’s in pain and lashing out, but instead knows perfectly how to respond. Jessica and Dain at times were curt, rude and did some bonkers stuff to one another, and yet I was still rooting for these two to get their HEA! There was only one major conflict after a good amount of relationship building and enemies to lovers banter.Dain was something else, but I loved how Jess was bold and strong and not letting Dain run roughshod over her. I have absolutely no reservations in saying, this is my favorite book of all time (or at least tied with Jane Eyre for favorite, which is nothing to sneeze at). The novel's popularity has endured and it is still considered one of the best historical romances ever published. Perhaps you will enjoy this more than me - especially if you love Beauty and the Beast, and find the plot of an intelligent woman being saddled with a sulky, miserable man appealing. It was no surprise that a book that pushed so many peoples' happy buttons ended up winning a RITA that year.
