About this deal

When he spots her being badgered by a Syrian diplomat, Sam moves in and rescues her, then strikes up a conversation.

He captures the places and people--and most of all, the sickening feeling in the gut--of this war that shattered poor Syria while America mostly watched. For me, a book should gather pace, perhaps a slow start as we get used to the characters, but then building to a crescendo. David McCloskey's first novel is a compelling and realistic political and spy drama set during the early stages of the Syrian civil war. David McCloskey experienced Syria firsthand as a CIA analyst, and he delivers a thrilling, graphic, gripping, and realistic--albeit fictional--portrayal of the CIA and the bloody, tragic Syrian uprising. But others get into the act, too, including Russian intelligence, an Israeli spy, and the jihadist rebels in Syria.

The power of this book is that it tells this devastating story through the eyes of those who suffered and survived because of love, the human relationship, and the power of what makes life worth living. He’d had the drilling at the Farm – ‘never get involved emotionally’ – but the heart sometimes rules the head. She is torn between her love for Sam versus her love for her hot-headed, impetuous and slightly crazy cousin Razan. Equally, I would have been thrilled with a rich historical fiction that made you feel and think deeply.

His character is portrayed as one of a soldier, doing his duty, despite however ruthless that requires him to be, but there is not a sense of perverse enjoyment, as there is with the others.Sam Joseph is tasked with recruiting a disaffected government official, an asset in Espionage parlance. An extremely effective modern espionage novel, filled with action and incident but also a profound knowledge of the people and factions of Syria, the complex maneuvers of spycraft, the gray areas, competing egos and overlapping priorities that make every day a journey through the minefield.

McCloskey portrays the incredible tension and the mission dangers so well, that the reader will feel sweat breaking out on her neck. But the cat and mouse chase for the killer soon leads to a trail of high-profile assassinations and the discovery of a dark secret at the heart of the Syrian regime, bringing the pair under the all-seeing eyes of Assad's spy catcher, Ali Hassan, and his brother Rustum, the head of the feared Republican Guard. As if spying in Damascus under the Assaad regime isn't nail-biting enough, their secret more than handler-asset relationship gives me the heebie-jeebies throughout the story! To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.
