About this deal

By completing your purchase, you agree to Audible's Conditions of Use and authorise Audible to charge your designated card or any other card on file. In January 2015 Dick and Angel Strawbridge embarked on the journey of a lifetime when they swapped their cosy two-bedroom flat in East London for a derelict château with 12 acres of land in the Loire valley. Not only do we have a wide choice of used books available, we'll also send your next read to you free of charge. I personally would've liked more focus on the specifics of doing up the chateau, but it was very enjoyable nonetheless.

Heartwarming, inspirational and beautifully narrated, just loved listening to them both narrating their own story, great to have more of a behind-the-scenes insight having enjoyed the TV show. They take turns reading a bit then there is a pause and Dick picks up from Angela which is a slight relief. That being said I was fascinated and had everyone I know watching this couple renovate what was essentially a fairytale castle in my mind.

As I wind down from lunch with the family, and take a brief moment to relax and breathe before I start preparing the pastry for the Tarte Citron for our New Year’s Eve dinner party guests, I thought I’d pop in and wish you a very happy New Year! He is a man of many interests, some of which are reflected in his successful and varied television career.

About the AuthorBorn in Burma, but raised and educated in Northern Ireland, Dick Strawbridge retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2001 before becoming a full-time television presenter and author (with arguably the best moustache in showbusiness). Throwing caution to the wind, Dick and Angel swapped their two-bedroom flat in East London for an abandoned and derelict castle in the heart of the Loire valley and embarked on the adventure of a lifetime with their two young children Arthur and Dorothy. I will start by saying I've known of Dick, Angel, and their Chateau for a couple of years after finding them on HGTV one night when I couldn't sleep. They appear to be just themselves throughout the tv show and it’s the same on the audio book, warts and all which I love. This is more or less what I was hoping for when I read Downton Shabby, I think—a light read that is chock full of personality and, you know, castle.Located in the bustling heart of Saint-German-des-Prés, just behind Église de Saint-Germain-des-Prés and the famous cafes Les Deux Magots and le Bonaparte cafe, this tiny place is a photographer’s delight. I love the Strawbridge family and their values and have been rooting for them since the show first aired. I did feel that the book was just a carbon copy of the first series, and even though it is a lovely book for fans, I was hoping for lots more like nuggets that was not featured on the channel four show. I've got a favourite recipe of my own for Mussels in Garlic and White Wine, but Angel's 'Sauce option 2' with coconut milk, ginger, chilli and fresh coriander is also delicious (page 70). How the had the energy to do all this work and prepare for their wedding with two little children in tow is amazing.

Thank you for sharing and best of luck Mr and Mrs Strawbridge for your continuing adventures, I hope we get to share some more of them over the years. We hadn't really followed the television series but (naively) assumed that this was a couple with a vision who had acted on their own. Her accent doesn’t help but the most irritating thing is that she is obviously reading it from a their script.

Throughout A Year At The Château, the dark bold text is Angel telling the story and the normal text is Dick. From watching the show, you know that anything they are involved in will be brilliant and worthwhile so I couldn't wait for the book.
