About this deal

I remember tuning in for the Culdcept Nintendo Direct what feels like an age ago, when we were sure it would never touch these shores. Follow Allen, a new recruit for the rebel Free Bat forces as you fight for freedom from the tyranny of Count.

Follow Allen, a new recruit for the rebel Free Bat forces as you fight for freedom from the tyranny of Count Kraniss. They go back in time and encounter the brother and sister gods of the world, whose fighting brought about the end of the world after they destroyed each other. And Revolt delivers on that front, with appropriately menacing monster designs and a wide variety of creatures. You're always kept on your toes, challenged by new opponents with new books, and being able to see what's in their hand at all times makes it a tense affair as you try to predict their next move. I remember a specific match where I own a necessary corner of the board – one all players have to pass through to reach a gate – controlling six of the eight spaces in the section. Three hours later the football game is over and I am still there on the couch, trying my damndest to get past that same board on my fourth attempt. While we could go beyond this simplified abbreviation and detail just how each facet of gameplay works, or share our top secret strategies (fat chance), it would be a disservice to Revolt itself, which does a wonderful job of easing the player in slowly but surely. There is just so much to keep engaged with in this game and just in the small time I've put into it, I have already seen the vast potential for strategy and divisive planning.

Words cannot describe the amount of love that went into this game ( just talking about the game, not the limited edition. To start the purchasing process, it is necessary to sign in with the Nintendo Account and the Nintendo Network ID. On a final note, I'd like to say that the Limited Edition version of this game was so profoundly packaged with amazing artwork and very cool extras that I simply couldn't believe the amount of love and detail that went into the preparation. Since Culdcept's cards are meant to be collectible – there's an in-game card counter that maxes over 200 – the cards are the main thing that needs to look good. If I claim a space next to that of an opponent, I can use my creature to attack theirs and take it as my own. This is especially important as certain cards are objectively better than others, making earlier items and creatures obsolete as you progress. Allen, the game's protagonist, is found unconscious and with amnesia on the streets of Celphas, a medieval-styled city, by Alicia, the leader of the Free Bats, a resistance group that opposes the city's ruler, Count Kraniss. The concept is simultaneously inventive and archaic, doling out moments of pure delight and agonizing frustration in equal doses. Culdcept Revolt is such a niche title – perhaps the most niche game in my gaming history – I can’t tell you if you’ll like it.

A recommended move option is also available for newcomers and I found it surprisingly competent at determining my best move. It's kind of a shame that the Switch's recent bucketload of fantastic games has squashed its chances of getting a 'novelty purchase' for anyone not a committed Culdcept or card game fan. The Free Match will link you with active players, and sets up three different difficulty levels to choose from. For starters, everything that one enjoys about fantasy, collectible card games, and the strategy of board games is present in Culdcept Revolt.
