The most sought-after toy from the Thunderbirds collection was Tracy Island, the home of Jeff Tracy and his sons. In 1991, the original Tracy Island toy was produced. The Tracy Island play set included movable parts that made way for the individual Thunderbirds just like the TV show. There was also sounds that mirrored the sounds made by each Thunderbird. In its new Saturday afternoon slot, the series launched with Earthbreaker (how did they resist going for the title ‘Groundbreaker’?), an episode that introduces the Mechanic, a ruthless techno-villain with mysterious links to the now-imprisoned Hood, and features a Thunderbird 2 crash landing that pays tribute to the original Thunderbirds episode, Terror in New York City. Jenna Coleman guest starred in the episode as Baines, the leader of a hapless survey team that ends up being rescued by Scott. Building on a consolidated audience of 3 million people in the UK, the series has since been sold to over 40 countries, and had notable successes in New Zealand, where it was the most-watched children’s show across all channels in 2015.

In 1992 there was a shortage of Tracy Island toys in the run up to Christmas due to BBC2 showing old episodes of the show. This was a huge manufacturing error that the children’s show Blue Peter jumped on. Blue Peter produced a segment on their show which demonstrated how you could build your own Tracy Island, which went down extremely well with an overwhelming amount of people requesting the instruction sheets. But what’s your favourite peice of merchandise you’ve ever bought? Perhaps it was the Dinky Thunderbird 2? The Vivid Imaginations Tracy Island? Or did you have to make a Blue Peter one? With thousands of toys and collectibles made over 6 decades, we’d love to hear about your favourite. Children might not be as familiar with the original series. How would you describe it to someone who knows nothing about it? John is the guy up in the sky – he’s the one keeping an eye on everything that’s going on. He’s very good at multi-tasking, thinking on his feet and keeps a very calm head. And for the people that are on the ground doing these mad, crazy rescues, it’s important to have that reassuring voice in your earpiece that knows the timeframe and what needs to be done. I wanted to watch them. All of my copies are recorded on VHS – my Dad recorded them because he wanted to introduce me to Thunderbirds, and of course now they don’t work, they’re all chewed up, they vibrate, jump around – I don’ think my VHS player even works any more! So I didn’t get to see the whole season again.Clearly the Thunderbirds ‘franchise’ continues to be in the very best of hands at Vivid. The company’s long and faithful association with the series was highlighted by the presence of their original Tracy Island toy at the show. The new Tracy Island is bigger, bolder and bristles with lights, sound effects and mechanical features.

What do you think about what David, Rasmus and Thomas had to say? You can leave a comment on this post, on the Fanderson Forum, or the Facebook Group. So, if the iconic “5, 4, 3, 2, 1 – Thunderbirds are go!” countdown sends shivers down your spine, or gives you that warm nostalgic glow, then the Gerry Anderson Store is the place for you! We have loads of Thunderbirds merchandise – from Thunderbirds t-shirts and badges, to build-your-own Thunderbird 1 and Thunderbird 2 kits. Have a look – it’s all F.A.B! It’s multi-generational TV, and that’s pretty much the only thing that brings the entire family together. Doctor Who is very much written to be multi-generational. It’s something that grandma can watch down to the smallest kids with a pillow in front of their faces, but I really do think that – and this is something that has been pushed on me – this is not a show necessarily for the adults, this is a show designed to introduce a new generation to a wonderful brand and show. Thunderbirds first began as a TV show, showing for the first time in the UK in 1965. This show would later progress into a number of films and toys. The characters were puppets that were built by head puppeteer Christine Glanville and her four-person team. The puppets were made up of around 30 different parts and each had a changeable head to show different facial expressions including a smile, a blink and a frown.

In early March Fanderson was invited to ITV’s offices in Gray’s Inn Road, London to interview the voice cast of Thunderbirds Are Go. In the first of three full-length interviews, we grill the men behind the voices of the Tracy brothers: Finally, it was revealed that ITVS GE will be partnering with Minclip to develop and distribute a free-to-play Thunderbirds Are Go mobile game for iOS and Android platform early next year. In a sign of the huge interest and secrecy that continues to surround the series, Vivid’s Thunderbirds line was only on display in a separate sealed off room within the company’s main stand.
